7 Signs Your Car's A/C Needs to Be Checked by a Professional

September 3, 2026

Summer in the Pacific Northwest might not carry the same reputation as Phoenix or Las Vegas, but Tacoma summers can get plenty warm, and the last place you want to be is stuck in traffic with a failing air conditioner. The good news is that your car's A/C system rarely fails without warning. It almost always gives you signs that something is off well before it stops working entirely. Knowing what to look for can save you from a sweaty commute and a more expensive repair down the road.

Here are seven of the most common signs that your car's A/C needs professional attention.

1. Your A/C Is Blowing Warm or Lukewarm Air

This is the most obvious sign, and it's the one that gets most drivers into the shop. If you turn on the A/C and the air coming from your vents is warm, room temperature, or just slightly cool, your system isn't doing its job. The cause could be as simple as low refrigerant levels (which a recharge can resolve) or it could point to a more serious issue like a failing compressor or a refrigerant leak. Either way, warm air is never something to ignore, especially as temperatures climb.

2. Weak Airflow From the Vents

If the air is cold but barely making it out of the vents, that's a different problem entirely. Weak airflow is often caused by a clogged cabin air filter, a failing blower motor, or a blockage somewhere in the duct system. A dirty cabin air filter is one of the most overlooked maintenance items on most vehicles. It's inexpensive to replace and can make a noticeable difference in A/C performance right away. If a new filter doesn't solve it, a technician can diagnose whether the blower motor or something else is to blame.

3. Strange Noises When the A/C Is Running

Your A/C system should run quietly in the background. If you notice rattling, clicking, squealing, or banging sounds when you turn it on, that's a sign something mechanical is wrong. A rattling noise could mean debris has gotten into the system or a component has come loose. A squealing sound often points to an accessory/serpentine belt or belt tensioner. Clicking or banging when the system engages can indicate a failing compressor clutch. These aren't sounds to put off, as catching a compressor issue early can prevent a much more costly full compressor replacement later.

4. Unpleasant or Musty Odors

A musty or moldy smell coming from your vents is one of the more unpleasant A/C symptoms, but it's also one of the more common ones. It's typically caused by moisture buildup inside the evaporator core or air ducts, which creates a breeding ground for mold and bacteria over time. Beyond being unpleasant, this can also affect your cabin air quality. A professional can clean the evaporator, treat the system, and in some cases clear a clogged evaporator drain that's allowing moisture to accumulate in the first place.

5. Water Leaking Inside the Cabin

Speaking of the evaporator drain: if you've noticed water pooling on your passenger side floorboard, a clogged evaporator drain is likely the culprit. Under normal operation, condensation from the evaporator drains safely outside the vehicle. When that drain gets clogged, the water has nowhere to go and backs up into the cabin. This isn't just an A/C problem; standing water inside your vehicle can lead to mold growth, electrical issues, and unpleasant odors if left unaddressed.

6. Your A/C Works Intermittently

If your A/C blows cold for a while and then randomly switches to warm, or simply turns off on its own, you're likely dealing with an electrical issue, a failing pressure sensor, or a compressor clutch that's on its way out. Intermittent problems are sometimes the trickiest to diagnose because the system may appear to be working fine when you bring it in. That's where professional diagnostic equipment makes a real difference, allowing technicians to monitor system pressure and electrical signals to catch the issue even when it isn't actively acting up.

7. Visible Leaks or Oily Residue Around A/C Components

If you notice an oily or greasy residue around your A/C hoses, fittings, or connections under the hood, that's a sign of a refrigerant leak. Refrigerant itself is colorless, but it carries compressor oil with it when it escapes, leaving behind a telltale residue. UV dye (which technicians add during a recharge) can make these leaks even easier to spot under a black light. A refrigerant leak won't fix itself, and continuing to run the system low on refrigerant can cause long-term damage to the compressor.

Don't Wait Until It Stops Working Completely
